The throat chakra is associated with the color blue. Given its location, the throat chakra governs the mouth, tongue, teeth, jaw, neck, throat, larynx or voice box, pharynx and the thyroid gland. The throat chakra enables our ability to speak our truth and to create our truth. It is our source of oral communication, authentic self-expression, and creativity.
But when the throat chakra is blocked or unbalanced, we become anxious, insecure, and excessively fearful of judgment or ridicule. Those feelings inhibit our ability to speak our truth and express our dreams, needs, and desires. It follows, then, that public speaking can become nearly impossible when the throat chakra is out of alignment, and even social situations can be very difficult.
More specifically, an overactive throat chakra leads us to use our voice in negative ways; tendencies toward lying, gossiping, and interrupting all reflect over-activity, as do speaking inappropriately and spending too much time trying to make oneself heard. On the other hand, excessive shyness, secretiveness, and an imperceptible voice, as well as being unable to express oneself, are the result of an underactive throat chakra. In addition, a blocked or unbalanced throat chakra leads to a variety of physical ailments, including laryngitis, thyroid disease, dental problems, TMJ, and neck pain, in addition to excessive or compulsive eating.
